The exhibition
In 1927 the Weissenhofsiedlung, an experimental area built by some of the greatest modernist architects of 1900’s Europe, was opened in Stuttgart, under Mies Van der Rohe’s artistic direction. The district was part of a great Exhibition organised by the Deutscher Werkbund, a group of artists, architects, designers and people from the industry. The exhibition, held in the Goethe-Institute of Rome during May and June 2018, displays the results of a research work that started in October 2017. The research work, developed and carried out by different groups, was based on the analysis of some of remaining buildings. The workshop is part of a series of events and other workshops.
The Arts & Crafts section
In the Arts and Crafts section, a group of young artists and artisans interpret the works of some important individuals present at the Exhibition held in Stuttgart in 1927, by creating an expressive language which could potentially evolve infinitely. Among the various works at the exhibition we can find two tapestries and two tailor-made costumes. The created works, just as the recent photographs of the area that are on display, allow the visitors to enjoy the colours, which are missing from the black and white historical images. The project is based on an international historical research with Rome and Stuttgart as its main locations.
